Hi, pneumothorax (PTx) is air in the pleural space, which is abnormal as pleural space should be devoid of air. Air can come in through 2 ways: abnormal opening in chest (like gunshot/stab wound) and bursting of bullae (a small bleb of air fromed in outer lung that bursted).

We usually divide it into tensional (emergency, usually after a blow to the chest, penetrating wound and trauma) and spontaneous (from symptom-free to pain, and tends to recur)

Pain in itself can be a sign of PTx, sure, but there are many many other causes to chest pain alone (chronic coughing, muscular strain during and after exercise being the most common, also referred pain from other organs can radiate to shoulder/scapula)

If you have had PTx before, or have family member known to have this condition, or a smoker/have connective tissue disease like Marfan's, it can be another episode of it. However, PTx itself is not that common in the general population. At least I have not seen it on an every-day basis.

It is impossible to give you a WWW diagnosis based on your complaints, I would say I highly suspect it is a muscular pain since you have had soccer and the pain did not aggravate tremendously.

As for the medical insurance coverage issue, check with your health care provider that if it is an admission due to PTx would they cover. Sorry I cannot help you much but PTx needs to be dealt with the right clinical setting and investigations, which is not available over the internet.
