Subject: Liran Weyr

When Onyth rose, Roth would catch her. This had been the standard for almost forty turns, and it seemed unlikely that anything would change. However, Liran Weyr was situated far to the north; nestled snugly in the heart of the mountains that marched across the barren land. Many turns after AVIAS set to destroy the thread for good, it was a weyr most people had forgotten about. Having little contact with the outside world suited the weyrfolk at Liran just fine; with a strong set of holds to supply them, there was no need to worry about fresh blood coming into the community. A strong, healthy queen and a capable bronze was all one small weyr required, wasn’t it?

It appeared as though Liran weyr had made a desperate mistake. AVIAS had not destroyed thread, merely postponed it for a few hundred turns. When it came tumbling from the sky, the dragonriders had got complacent and lazy. It hit them hard; many casualties were sustained; indeed the weyr went from six wings strong, to having barely enough dragonriders to make one.

They were in dire need of some strong clutches, but Onyth was approaching her 90th turn and was showing her age. She rose less frequently; producing the quality of clutch she always had, but so much smaller than they had ever been. It became apparent that soon would come her last mating; the clutch she left behind the very thing which would either ensure the future survival of the weyr, or allow it to succumb to ruin.
