Subject: The Brooklyn Labor Lyceum

Up until 1958 Bricklayers Local #9 Brooklyn NY had to use the Brooklyn Labor Lyceum hall for their meetings beacause, as with many other unions of that period had no home of their own.
By a vote of the rank and file a new Bricklayers building was built on Metropolitan Ave in Forest Hills. The dedication ceremony was held in May of 1958. My dad took me and my sister to that ceremony and I got to shake hands with Mayor Robert Wagner, senators Javitts and Keating, Governor Averell Harriman, soon to be Governor Nelson Rockefeller, and Lt. Governor DeLuca.
Being that my dad was a bricklayer I also knew all of the really big shots like Arthur Wengert the locals President, Anthony Cappetelli the union secretary, and John "Bob" Scola one of the business agents. Unfortunatly, over the years the union lost membership and had to sell their building and move into a storefront further up Metropolitan Ave near 71st Ave.
