Subject: Downtown Brooklyn

The “Spirit of Christmas Present” was alive in downtown Brooklynon on Friday. Shoppers of all ages could be seen on Fulton St going in and out of stores and chatting with each other on the sidewalk. The streets are adorned with holiday wreaths and the store windows are beautifully decorated.

The Salvation Army was ringing bells on several corners, reminding us to share with others. The bell ringers in front of Brooklyn borough hall were singing carols. The holiday music being piped in was “Silver Bells.” I stopped and smiled as they sang “It’s Christmas Time in the City.” Many of the stores and restaurants were offering big discounts on purchases and meals. In several of these, the owners could be seen greeting and helping people — a real “hometown” touch!

We have a great thing going! I suggest more Brooklynites discover it. For those who think parking is a problem, some of the spaces available are no farther from stores than those in the “big” lots at the “big” shopping places. Moreover, we have several bus lines that come into the city from various directions.

The downtown area also provides shopping at the gift shop of the Brooklyn museum. This also serves to benefit not-for-profit organizations while providing unique presents.

Having lived here for almost 50 years, I know that a lot of effort on the part of a lot of people over those years has made downtown Brooklyn what it is today. We owe them our gratitude and our support. “It’s Christmas time in the city” — hope to see you there!
