$5,000 reward set for missing woman
April 6, 2001

Chavez

By Matt Joyce
Herald Staff Writer

The Southern Ute Indian Tribal Council is offering a $5,000 cash reward for any information leading directly to the whereabouts of Brenda Chavez, a tribal member who has been missing for almost two months.

Southern Ute Police Chief Roger Naranjo said that his department has no evidence or leads in its investigation of the Aztec woman’s disappearance.

"We have nothing," Naranjo said. "We’re still following every lead possible."

Chavez, 40, was last seen Feb. 9 at her office in Ignacio, where she worked for the Environmental Programs Division of the tribal government.

According to a missing person’s report, Chavez intended to drive home after work that day, but she never arrived.

She was last seen wearing a long-sleeved black pullover sweater, olive green pants and black boots. Chavez’s car, which has not been found, is a green 1995 Toyota 4-Runner, with New Mexico plate 697-KAR.

Detective Sgt. Tim Black of the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office in New Mexico said in March that his office conducted a joint search with the Southern Ute Police using the sheriff’s helicopter, but nothing was found.
