Really I can't even imagine reading that book while not feeling well, I felt kind of sick when it was done and I was perfectly healthy. I think it was the intensity that made me decide I needed to just put it down for a bit. In RC Lymond strives so hard to turn himself into a machine without feeling that it's always hard for me to take that journey with him. I always thought that was part of the reason Dunnett chose Russia for this part of the story- the landscape reflected Lymond's inner state- and of course it was an epic canvas for our man.

Jamie actually existed with me before I read Lymond, but certainly there are shades of similarity between the two boys. I tend to think Jamie is a shade less tormented and somewhat nicer. :)
