I'm trying to sort out when Gabriel switched sides and when he decided to try and enlist Lymond? or was he always competing with him.

Do we know exactly why Gabriel sent Joleta to Scotland? Was it simply to entangle Lymond? I know he had heard of Lymond and was intrigued but that seems far fetched. Was it because of her affair with D'Harcourt? It seems Gabriel would want her around if simply just to be his whore but maybe that was getting harder and harder to conceal. You have to think, he'd have worried a bit about what she'd get up to alone in Scotland? So was he always planning on coming himself?

It seems hard to believe she could have kept up the purity image so well after already bearing a child- and having an affair with a knight.

I've just finished the siege of Tripoli and know that Gabriel was supplying the Turk with info, but is this when he changed sides or had he planned it already? I'm thinking his original purpose to become Grand Master and when that backfired he headed off to Scotland. Or was he really just trying the whole time to engineer the Knights fall for the Turks? I can't quite get a grip on his backstory.
