both that he doesn't love her and that she does love him, and that she is dying too. Nicholas had a tendency to not give himself credit where credit is due. Diniz was right, what he showed was great compassion and love as well, perhaps not the love Katelina would have wanted from him had she lived, but love nevertheless- maybe exactly the sort of love you need when dying. I hope that helps a bit, Susie- even after all these years and I think three reads of RoS, I still am certain that I'm missing a lot.
