Subject: Sam

I should be tarred and feathered because I just don't keep up with old friends. Sam, Mike Taylor and I used to have a lot of fun at Gilley's studio in Pasadena, Texas. I won't even start telling stories because I'd start laughing too much and couldn't finish. Besides, having just found out Sam was gone, I'm not really in a mood to laugh.

People used to say Sam was a great singer. But, they didn't know the half of it. You didn't know what a truly great singer he was unless you were ever in a studio with him and he would be sitting at the mixing board and suddenly grab his guitar and turn around and say "hey, listen up" and he would just start on some line that popped into his head. That guy could have the sweetest voice you ever heard.

I've often thought of him and many, many times have said to my wife, "I wonder whatever came of Sam Neely?". Well, now I know and it saddens me greatly, but I feel extremely fortunate and blessed to have known him.

JC
