Re: As Brazilian election nears, scandals fade

Dear Larry Rohter,

I have always been brought up to believe, that in general, scandals are never looked upon very highly. Current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was caught in the ‘biggest corruption scandal in Brazil’s modern history’. What I can’t seem to gather from all of this is how he is now back in the running, and even in the lead for this upcoming election. His post office contract wrongdoing does not go unforgotten on a president’s resume.
With elections happening soon, as today is the scheduled day for voting, Da Silva as managed to buy himself back into good with people nationwide. The article states that he’s increased his standing by ‘generous patronage and social programs’, which seems to me as if he is just buying his way out of a hole he created for himself. All that’s going on is that he is giving back money that he initially took to fund his campaign illegally the first time around.
On top of everything else, he is connecting more with a poorer class then with the more prosperous area. He tries to link his past in with feeling their pain, and he’s quoted to seem as a big fan of the poor nine-state area. Later in the article, he is gaining even more support through social programs aimed towards easing the conditions of poor people. This ‘family allowance’, I believe, is just another way to ride off the scandal.
Brazilians need to be reminded of Da Silva’s wrong doings on a more regular basis, especially during election time, as to allow him more time in office, is to allow him more time for scandal, lies, and cover-up.

Sincerely,

Joshua Testasecca
