Subject: Brazilian Election

Dear Editor,

This letter is being written concerning the reelection of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. I am mostly curious as to why he seems to be so highly favored regardless of all the negative exposure. Why re-elect someone who has not only been involved in bribery scandals and kickback schemes, but whose proposals failed (I say that regarding the Zero Hunger campaign). From what I read in various articles, da Silva seems to be a man with big plans and promises, but who is very unlikely to follow through. What is it about Lula that causes voters to “excuse” his failures? Moreover, are there no other candidates that could do better than him? I do believe the people should be forgiven of mistakes and past sins, but da Silva seems to be a repeat offender when it comes to scandals (in both 2002 and 2005) and broken promises.

Now, please understand this is not a letter of judgment, as this is a common problem in the United States as well. President Bush survived much criticism and was reelected for a second term. Even locally, with Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, we have had the issue of reelecting someone who has clearly failed in many areas and has been involved in numerous scandals. This just proves that this is an issue of global concern. Why do we continue to reelect unfavorable candidates?

After seeing the results of the first round of elections, though, where da Silva did not take the landslide vote of 50%, I am reassured that maybe people are finally realizing what the penalties may be for reelecting him. After all, there is truth in the cliché that if we do not learn from the past, we are doomed to repeat it.
