Racism – How Long will Bigotry Persist?
by William Alkmin

I’ve read Vladimir Skaletsky’s piece "Racism: A Personal Account" available at the Editorial/Opinion section of TAO – Teen Advice Online. I thought of writing about racism because I’ve been working closely with a white technician from South Africa and the issue of apartheid and racism has inevitably been brought up a couple of times. It looks like this issue still remains very sensitive for both black and white South Africans. He says “it is easy for people outside South Africa to talk about racism; it is different when you live there. South Africa has made us racists”. It is a pity that the belief that race or skin color accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others still persists in our days.
I think people are racist not because they are intrinsically bad but because ignorance makes them strongly partial to their own group, religion, race, or politics and makes them intolerant of those who differ. People usually carry on the misconceptions inherited by their ancestors. The fact that changes take place too slowly gives grounds for government agencies to promote educational programs on racial diversity. But we shall not forget that each one of us is responsible for freeing the world not only from racism but also from other kinds of prejudice such as social, and gender prejudice.
