Philippine Idol - Reality Talent Show to Beat!
Suspense, drama and excitement all rolled into one entertaining program! That is what Philippine Idol brings to viewers of the world-class reality talent show every weekend.
Despite the storm grey clouds and icy weather, Idol mania continues to sizzle nationwide! The countdown began Saturday as our top 12 finalists came to the Megamall Philippine Idol Theater for an OPM showdown. It was a long night but well worth the wait as our 12 idol hopefuls proved that they had the talent and the spunk to be dubbed as the nation’s singing icon.
Idol fans began their text and phone brigades as soon as all the contestants were done with their performances. But due to the aftermath of the “Milenyo” storm many telephone lines were down and mobile telecommunications were also affected. But some were persistent and lucky enough so that their votes still came through for their favorite idols.
Come Sunday night, the Philippine Idol Theater was once again ablaze with color and song as the Top 12 opened with Francis M’s “Kaleidoscope World.” Of course, this opening number would not be complete without the special participation of the man behind the music, Pinoy Rapping sensation, Francis Magalona who is one of our mainstay judges in the competition.
Onto the heart of the matter that evening, our 12 idol hopefuls were segregated into four groups of 3. The first two groups being promptly told to sit down as they had enough votes to put them on safe ground. We recap on the stellar performances of our remaining men, namely Ken, Gian and Jan. But our bottom 3 goes to the girls composed of Mau, Arms and Jeli. They all had solid performances the previous evening and our often misunderstood judges thought so too. Was this going to be another one of those evenings? The situation was intense. This was going to be “bye bye” time once again.
Among the 3 Jeli Mateo was the most improved with her rendition of Joey Albert’s “Iisa Pa Lamang.” Redeeming herself in so many ways as she sang this song with true depth and soul in her voice, Jeli proved that aside from being gifted with a pretty face and height to look up to, she was also blessed with a lovely voice, which she has now justifiable used to her advantage. Did the voting public approve? Ryan Agoncillo singled her out from the 3 and asked Jeli to come forward. Our 5’8” gal was visibly relieved when Ryan told her to go and sit down with the rest of the group because she was safe for the evening.
And then there were 2
Mau and Arms remained onstage and understandably their nerves were giving out and once more tears began to flow. Arms has grown very close to Mau who has been her roommate during the competition. In desperate tears, Mau could only lament why was it that she was once again in this same situation. Our heart definitely went out to these two wonderful belters who have consistently outperformed themselves as the competition advanced. They had to accept the fact that one of them was going home that night.
But in a wonderful twist and turn out of events Ryan Agoncillo announced the unexpected and said that no one was being voted out that night. Once more, an outpouring of tears but this time for very different reasons. Taking into consideration the total lack of communications caused by the recent typhoon, ABC 5 executives consulted with Fremantle from the UK on how best to address the situation. A large number of votes were not cast because the phone lines were down and the mobile telcos were also down in so many high voting population areas like Metro Manila.
Unique circumstances merit special consideration and this is why Philippine Idol is the reality talent show to beat in the country. Predictability is not in the agenda and consideration for the fans and the contestants remain the show’s top priority. An added element in the competition is that this was not just going to be an outright delay of bringing down the contestants to only 11. To be fair to the idol fans who were able to cast their votes for this weekend their votes will be carried out and added to the votes that will be cast after next week’s performances. So if you were among those who were not able to cast their votes this weekend then next weekend means a double effort to ensure that your favorite idol hopeful remains in the competition!

- Yeah, definitely, Julia is starting to trick us Filipinos. I couldn't imagine why Anna didn't make the cut since I vote her two hours in a day and that's more than a hundred votes. Plus, there are other people who voted her including her friends, family, x-bfs, schoolmates, classmates, professors, the TFC in other countries, and many others. It's so skeptical there was a tie votes in Asia Pacific region and the judges picked-up another one, which was India, to make it three from this region.
