Starting with a Monday, July 24 kickoff event, Austin CarShare will begin pre-enrolling members for its innovative carshare service scheduled to launch this fall. Carsharing is a service that provides members with 24-hour access to a fleet of cars and trucks on a per hour and per mile basis. Gas, insurance, parking, maintenance, and roadside assistance are all included in the price of usage. Members will be able to reserve a car online or by phone, walk to the nearest parking space, open the doors with an electronic key card, and drive off. They will be billed at the end of the month for time and mileage. Carsharing will offer another transportation option for Austin without the cost of car ownership. Carsharing also has a proved track record in other cities of reducing automotive emissions and reducing the number of vehicles on the road. Pre-enrollment will include a $25 application fee and $300 refundable deposit. Austin CarShare rates are projected to to be $4/hour and 44¢/mile with a $10 monthly membership fee. Austin CarShare is also offering founding member status to those who wish to make their deposit a tax deductible donation to aid in launching services.
