KCRW of Los Angeles offers a great program / audio podcast series called DnA - Design and Architecture.

This week's show focuses to green spaces, bus design, and radical cars in Los Angeles (scroll all the way to the bottom)

In other news, Static!, a Swedish consortium, has designed a flower-shaped lamp that monitors the overall energy usage of a house and rewards the user by "blooming" when power consumption is low (it closes if comsumption levels are high). Time Magazine has named it one of the best inventions of 2006. Static! offers a range of industrial products focused to exploring ways of using design to influence individual energy consumption choices.

To scale this idea up to the urban level, consider psychogeography
- the "study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behavior of individuals."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychogeography

In other words, it is the exploration (by scientists, artists, and others) of the social and political aspects (including values transmissions) of architecture, space, and/or planning.

Pschogeography is closely related to Situationist Theory (including the idea of the "society of the spectacle")

Students might enjoy reading the Situationist pamphlet "The Poverty of Student Life" - as an introduction to Situationist ideas/writings

Crosswalk is a journal of psychogeography and experimental public art

The Urban Squares Project also nods towards psychogeography:
