"Live at The Square, Harlow 5 March 2004

Or

Queered up in Harlow

The Square is a tiny venue, holding just 250. Seemed to take ages queueing in the cold to be given wristbands and sign in..

Arrived just in time for the first support act, 3 girl (plus one bloke) act Toxic Slut who played short, catchy punk-pop numbers in minimalist clothing. Can’t be bad. Reminded me a bit of a cross between long-forgotten Big Boy Tomato and the Tubes. But with more fishnet.

After their set we had a brief chat with the new drummer Pip Mailing, who seemed friendly, if a little nervous. It must be hard fitting in so quickly with a band who have been together so long.

Then it was time for cock-rockers, Narkan. They seemed to have a lot of fans in the venue, which by now was pretty full. They have some catchy 80’s type songs and an excellent repertoire of rawk and roll one-foot-up-on-the-monitor stances, and frankly who would want to see a band that doesn’t?

After Narkan had finished, Lauren came and said hello. I still can’t believe she came over for DLR last weekend, went home to France, and came back for this gig. That’s dedication.

After the usual delay for amp setting up (those blue Hughes and Kettners again), the Quireboys came on a little after 10.

Spike was on top form this evening, regaling the audience with amusing stories and pantomime-like exchanges. Though I am a little worried about Spikes drink problem… he kept knocking them over (four bottles of cider during the opening song). Speaking of the first song, I love ‘Good to see ya’ as an opener, its fast, catchy, makes you want to dance and the title is apt.

Nigel Mogg, (apparently “half man half dog”) was looking very fetching in those white shoes that I covet. Sadly there seemed no opportunity to commandeer them. Paul was as always getting on with his guitar playing quite happily, his reputation improved halfway through the show when Spike informed the audience “He’s got the biggest **** in rock n roll didn’t you know?” And then diminished once again when Spike continued; “so Griff tells me anyway”

Spike referred back to their days of being The Queerboys, and told us “it’s a bit frustrating being the only straight one in the band”, this was only seconds before asking the audience to cheer Nigel for having a baby… Also there is a new song called “Lorraine” apparently this is about a girl called Lorraine that Griff took out one night and he was actually called Bob. Griff however alleged he “had no recollection”.

Setlist is as follows:

1. Good To See Ya (renamed from ‘Down and Out’ since December)
2. Misled
3. Tramps And Thieves
4. Finer Stuff
5. C’mon
6. This Is Rock ‘n Roll
7. White Trash Blues
8. There She Goes Again
9. Hey You
10. Lorraine
11. 7 O’Clock
12. I Don’t Love You Anymore
13. Sex Party

As part of the usual mayhem, ‘Sex Party’ featured most of Toxic Slut on backup vocals.

Quite a short gig, just 65 minutes, but made up for it by the party atmosphere and great sound in the venue.

We took a small number of photographs, now uploaded so see Harlow folder. Anyone got any from this gig, or Hammersmith? We appear to be running out of room for folders.

Our apologies to Lauren, who because of us came out worst of the mixup at setlist-grabbing time, although I understand Spike made it up to you!

Alex
(with the odd sentence inserted by the other half… it isn’t me that covets Nigels shoes… honest)"
