What do you mean by 'messed up'?

If you understand that putting new strings on will brighten the sound and will introduce more of a 'click' to the sound, you can adjust for this. You should also be able to get the sound roughly right even with old strings.

I reckon I could walk up to most amps and get something reasonable, without too much fuss, fairly quickly. It just takes knowing what constitutes an ok sound and what each dial does...
