At the end of the day The Square needs to have the contest with an audience vote - people come along to support their mates and bands have to put an effort into getting people in to vote for them. That means the square takes a lot of money on the door so it is able to put on the contest, without that door money and big audiences, the rock contest would have folded years ago. Its called "good business".
A lot of good bands get knocked out in the first round, but if they really are good they won't give a toss about losing and will use the experience to build on their careers, so it shouldn't really be a big deal.
Round 5 was one of the best so far, 3 different bands with different levels of experience and so good bits in every band -
Eracol had some good tunes and the poppier somngs worked well, however the drummer got lost a few times and was following the band rather than vice versa and there were a few too many pregnant pauses on stage when guitars were changed.
April Falls had a good rhythmn section but looked like 2 separate bands at times with the singer and guitarist doing heir own thing. Getting everyone on stage doesn't look professional and pisses off the staff, but good explosive performance and some good tunes.
Terminus had a good stage presence, fantasticly tight drummer and some well worked tunes.

Its good to see parents getting vocal about their kids' bands - the rock contest wouldn't be the same without them slagging of the staff, other bands and judges.
And one last thing, its good for the local music scene if bands from Harlow have an advantage in terms of votes - if the Harlow rock contest final was just full of bands from London or wherever it wouldn't give local talent much of a look in.
