Unfortunately, that is just a variant of the 'what ever sells the most is the best' argument.

Just because they didn't go through doesn't mean that they weren't the best band or most artistically valid.

If the most artistically valid or best artist always won, that would mean that Michelle McManus was the best when she was at number one. By definition, it also means that all chart bands are better than the bands you listen to, unless of course you listen to predominately chart artists and not 5 Knuckle, 50 Caliber, Distillers etc...
