Lowndes Junior Miss wins 2007 state title
By Ida Brown / senior staff writer
Aspiring attorney/broadcast journalist Caitlyn Terrell Smith, Lowndes County Junior Miss, won the coveted 2007 Mississippi Junior Miss title during Saturday’s final night of competition at the Temple Theatre.
The statuesque Smith smiled broadly as she accepted the Mississippi Junior Miss medallion from Virginia Fox, Mississippi’s 2006 Junior Miss.
A shower of confetti fell from the ceiling as the 40 other contestants rushed toward Smith — giving her big hugs and kisses, and extending their congratulations.
In addition to the overall state title, Smith received a $9,000 scholarship from the Mississippi Junior Miss Scholarship Foundation and a $1,000 scholarship from Mississippi Coca-Cola Bottlers Association.
Smith also received the overall talent award, a $1,000 scholarship, and she was a double-preliminary winner in scholastics and fitness — $500 scholarships for each — during Friday’s competition. She is the daughter of Jeffrey and Dr. Laura T. Smith of Columbus.
First alternate was Allison Kelly Pace of Madison County. The daughter of Kaye and Ben Pace of Madison, Pace received a $4,250 scholarship from Mississippi Junior Miss and a $200 scholarship from Mississippi Coca-Cola. Pace was a preliminary winner in scholastics.
Second alternate was Kathryn Ellyse Wyatt of Perry County. The daughter of Joseph and Gloria Wyatt of Richton, Wyatt received a $2,000 scholarship from Mississippi Junior Miss and a $150 scholarship from Mississippi Coca-Cola. Wyatt also was a double preliminary winner in self-expression and scholastics.
Third alternate was Dailee ReJoyce Eubanks of George County. The daughter of Bruce and Dawn Eubanks of Lucedale, Eubanks received a $1,500 scholarship from Mississippi Junior Miss and a $150 scholarship from Mississippi Coca-Cola. Eubanks also was a preliminary winner in talent.
Held under the auspices of the Mississippi Junior Miss Inc., the program opened with a fanfare that included the introduction of the Junior Misses. To lighten the moment, the judges wore large blue star-shaped glasses as they smiled at the contestants. Another highlight of the evening was a moving farewell by Mississippi Junior Miss 2006 Virginia Fox, which culminated with an inspiring dance.
Smith will go on in June 2007 to compete in the America’s Junior Miss national finals in Mobile, Ala.
