Wilder wins Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen
Kasey Wilder of Pontotoc was crowned Saturday night as 2006 Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen, edging out her step-sister, Amanda Duff, both double winners in the three nights of preliminary competition at the Vicksburg Convention Center.
“I just feel shocked,” said Wilder, a 17-year-old senior at Pontotoc High School told a reporter for the Vicksburg Post shortly after winning the pageant. “I can’t quit smiling.”
Wilder was crowned by Natalie Wood of Oxford, who won the crown during the inaugural pageant, also at the convention center.
Patterned after the Miss Mississippi pageant, which will be in Vicksburg for the 48th year this month, Saturday night’s competition began with the naming of the top 10 of the 40 contestants. Those 10 went on to compete anew in talent and active wear. Additionally, the top five were asked to respond to questions that were personalized spins on current events.
For her talent, Wilder sang “New York State of Mind,” which gave her a win in preliminaries Friday night. She had won the active-wear competition Wednesday.
Her step-sister and first runner-up, Amanda Duff, also 17 and from Pontotoc, tied in the win for the talent competition Wednesday night and tied in the active-wear Thursday night.
Others in the top 10 also included the other two contestants from Pontotoc County: Katie Waldrop, 16, of Ecru, and Lauren Rosado, 16, of Pontotoc.
Wilder is the daughter of George and Kathy Duff and Johnny and Janet Wilder, all of Pontotoc.
She is student council vice president and a member of her school’s French Club.
She also is a member of the homecoming court.
She also received the Congressional Award for Leadership.
She will compete Aug. 16-19 in Orlando in the 2006 Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant.
The statewide pageant is open to girls 13 to 17 and serves as an introduction to the pageant world in Mississippi and the United States.
It is managed under the Miss Mississippi Corporation.
