Subject: Maurice Wolin is heading to court./

A prominent Piedmont doctor is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 2 to answer to felony charges stemming from his arrest in late August in Petaluma in a sting operation involving online sex crimes with children.

Maurice Wolin appeared on Dateline NBC's "Catch a Predator" show Oct. 6, when he showed up at a Petaluma house hoping for a "date" with what he thought was a 13-year-old girl he had been chatting with online.

The "date" was a decoy, part of a six-month investigation involving Petaluma police, Sonoma County Sheriff's Department, Santa Rosa police and other agencies working with Perverted Justice, a nationwide volunteer organization that monitors online Web sites and chat rooms.

According to Dateline, Wolin's screen name is "Talldreamy doc." He had asked online about the girl's bra size and oral sex. A transcript of the program quotes Wolin saying, "Oh man! I wasn't doing anything" as he approached the decoy in the house. Wolin then says, "I am in big trouble. I did something really stupid." He was nervous waiting for his underage "date" and spilled a drink, according to the Dateline transcript.

Wolin and 28 other men were arrested in the sting.

Wolin, who has lived in Southern California, has hired high-powered defense attorney Blair Berk, who is representing actor Mel Gibson in the DUI case against him.

Berk said from her Los Angeles office, "Dr. Wolin is in no way, shape or form any kind of predator or threat to anyone, particularly a child. He is an incredibly decent human being. I would hope that the community would not rely on a salacious entertainment television show to form their opinions before Dr. Wolin is able to present the true facts in a court of law."

Piedmont police Capt. John Hunt said Petaluma police executed a search warrant Aug. 27 at Wolin's Scenic Avenue home, confiscating computers and other items.

Wolin, 48, is charged with unlawful oral copulation, an unsuccessful attempt to commit a crime and burglary, according to the Sonoma County District Attorney's office. If convicted, he could face a two- to six-year prison sentence.

Wolin is registered as a physician and surgeon with the Medical Board of California. His license is current and he has had no disciplinary actions, felony convictions or malpractice judgments on his record. He graduated in 1984 from State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine.
