As an owner, would you be more likely or less likely to ensure you bought a dog that wouldn't bite if you were to be held completely liable for it's actions?

I hear all sorts of pit-bull owners that claim that their dog won't bite in any circumstance, only to find their dog biting their own child, or a neighbour, or a stranger that came to the door to ask directions.

Anecdotal evidence, for sure, but when you see it over and over.....

Why is it you think that pit bulls have gotten such a reputation? Is it because they are gentle and predictable, or is it because they have a tendancy to turn viscious without warning?
