Newly reunited legendary punk band ALICE DONUT (www.alicedonut.com) is slated to release "Three Sisters," their first studio album in eight years. The album will be released May 18 on newly formed Howler Records, distributed nationally by Caroline. The band recently returned from Austin, TX, where they performed at the annual South-by-Southwest festival, playing to rabid fans at the famous Room 710 club, and premiering new material to much acclaim.
After a self-imposed hiatus following their 1,000th live show in 1996, few thought they'd ever see ALICE DONUT back together. But in 2003, after seven years of working with other artists as disparate as Rasputina and Tadanoshin,
building their own recording studio and developing a huge backlog of new material, original members Tomas Antona, Michael Jung, Stephen Moses and Sissi Schulmeister reunited to create "Three Sisters," the first of three interrelated
albums to be released over the next three years.
"Three Sisters" will be released as an enhanced CD-ROM, complete with a video for "Helsinki" created by fan Curt Duttenhaver. The Michigan resident was chosen winner of the ALICE DONUT fan video contest launched on the band's
website. Duttenhaver, a follower of the band since the early '90s, is a high-voltage specialist who taught himself to use the Macromedia Flash program in order to enter the contest.
Questioned as to what inspired Duttenhaver's leap into videography, he states, "When I found the website, I jumped for joy! I got 'Three Sisters' and it was grand. I played [it] so much on the jobsite, both of my apprentices were
singing along. The song rocks! That's why I did 'Helsinki' for my video."
He further explains, "The fans on the message board and Michael [Jung] provided me with a lot of live Donut photos and Tom (Antona) told the story of what inspired the song. I believe you should leave some things to the imagination.
So I focused on that flying pig and the crazy eyeball, and just went with the flow. Something about pigs and cows singing 'I got a hole like a woman' just cracks me up."
ALICE DONUT, a preeminent underground band since the 1980s, has been known for its relentless touring, complex and disturbing lyrics, innovative music, and hyperkinetic performances. The Philadelphia City Paper declared: "Alice
Donut is simply one of the best bands in these here United States." Spin Magazine wrote: "Brainy, subversive pop-core from New York." And England's prestigious Melody Maker gushed: "…some of the most beautifully dirty pop music you'll hear anywhere."
