Subject: Large old lightning whelks vs. youngsters

I can't believe I forgot to mention this in my trip report!

I reported that I found several large lightning whelks, but I forgot to point out the interesting part about the large whelks vs. the smaller colorful young whelks. Since I had never found any large ones before, I didn't realize that, although the shell of the older whelks is pale in color, the colorful young shell is still visible in the center of the crown. There is a photo showing this in my dotphoto album. Neat! I wonder if there is a certain age at which all whelks starts producing the pale shell?
