Hi Bird and Connie-

Yes, the Christmas atmosphere on the Islands is great! We usually go in the spring and summer so when we went for our first Christmas stay in the late 80's we had no idea what we had been missing out on. I wasn't so sure it would seem "Christmassy" (is that a word?) but I was wrong, it was beautiful and was one of our fondest holiday memories ... especially for the kids.

Connie mentioned the Marinas ... she is right you should check out the Marinas. They put on a great light show, who would have thought to see fully-lit Christmas trees complete with wrapped gifts under the tree and wreaths on the bows of boats. Maybe I am in the dark ages when it comes to this sort of thing but I have never seen anything quite like it. It doesn't take a whole lot to entertain me I guess but this was done with such class and was such an unexpected and pleasant surprise.

BTW, we saw a painting (about a year ago) of a Marina at Christmas-time, it was done by a lady who frequented this forum. I have meant to get in touch with her as I wanted to buy it for my wife so we can remember Islands especially this time of year.

We (and some friends of ours) are going back over the holidays again this year, first time in 16 years, we can't wait. I know leaving a tropical paradise will be quite hard but it's even worse when your homecoming involves having to plow the driveway when just 24 hours earlier I was enjoying my wave runner. Gone will be the scent of coconut sunscreen and replaced with Ben Gay from shoveling ... sun tanned legs are rudely covered up with thermal pants ... feet preferring sandals/flip flops over clunky boots ... suddenly doing the Sanibel Stoop "Midwestern style" is stooping over to pick up the heavy chunks of icy boulders the snow plow guy ever-so-kindly left at the end of the driveway while plowing the streets ... building sand castles Midwestern style is letting the kids dig tunnels in the many mountains of snow, courtesy of the snow plow guy.

On a more serious side, as Thanksgiving is upon us I really can't complain about snow. I am very Thankful and Pray for those less fortunate.

Hope you have a great trip Bird and look forward to your trip report!

Dan M.
