I take a gentle approach to cleaning shells. For shiny shells, highly prized shells, or very colorful shells like true tulips and alphabet cones, I just soak them in some soapy water and rinse thoroughly. For all others, I soak them in water with a good splash of bleach, then rinse thoroughly, usually multiple rinses in clean water.

For "stinkers" and algae-covered shells, I use a stronger bleach/water solution, but I still try to minimize the amount of bleach used. Boiling the shells in water will sometimes help. You can pick off the crusties (barnacles) with a dental pick.

For one particularly stinky lace murex, bleaching and boiling didn't work. So I left it outside on my patio all summer, and let the bugs take care of whatever stinky meat was in it. Worked like a charm!
