I have often recommended a tour of Corkscrew Swamp, an Audobon sanctuary about 45 minutes SE of the causeway. It is very nice, with a 2.25 mile boardwalk through several types of ecosystem. We saw dozens of 'gators, spoonbills, ibises, herons, raccoons, whitetail deer. It was really great. Also, if they like the water, I recommend kayaking in the mangroves. Captiva Kayak is a great place to start from (better gear and less crowded than Ding Darling's concession.
