Hi, Chrissi.
I have taken the Tropic star for both a day trip, and an overnight outing to Cayo Costa. Its a bit of a drive over to pine island, but I think it is worth it because you get more time on Cayo Costa. They drop you off at the back dock, and the park has a wagon to take you to the gulf side. You get about 3-4 hours of exploring time, and then you have to meet the wagon tram at a certain time to go back. Be sure to take a watch, as time goes faster than you would think. -- If you are going for shelling, I would strongly suggest walking down to the shoals. It is south of the camping area, and is quite a walk, but its worth it. Just walk until you see little "fingers" of land jutting out. There is a large inlet that cuts off a section of the shore, so walk until you get to that point. (I would say this takes about 1/2 hour or so)
Just be sure to remember that you have to be back at a certain time, so you will need to leave plenty of time to get back. --Take lots of water, as there isn't much shade at the shoreline, but don't overload yourself, because everything feels heavier on the way back! (I would suggest a backpack). -- If you like camping, or staying in a cabin, you might want to consider staying overnight. It would give you a lot more time to explore, or go shelling. Let me warn you though, its really roughing it. You will have to take all of your own food, drinks, and flashlights. There is no electricity at the camp sights. --
Cayo Costa is a neat experience. I go strickly for shelling. I have not really found the shelling to be much better than Sanibel, but the shells may be a bit larger, and you will not have much competition if any. Be sure that you time your trip to fall at low tide. It is not worth going if the tide is too high. The high tide tends to burry all the shells.

I have never taken the shelling trip from Captiva Cruises, however I have taken a Dolphin Cruise. It was fun, and the crew was nice enough, but I probably wouldn't go again.-- I also took the Sunset trip with Tarpon Bay Explorers. It is a very peaceful outing, with a lovely cruise of the bay. They also let you experiance the touch tanks. The crew was fabulous.
With whatever you decide, I am sure you will have loads of fun.
Cindy
