We just got back from Sanibel on Sunday and there is red algae on the beach and in the water all along West Gulf. It's definitely not as bad as red tide but there were some pretty bad smells when the algae started to ferment. Once you got about 3-4 foot into the water you were past most of it. Needless to say it was hard finding shells along the shoreline. We had heard it's because of the water releases from the Caloosahatchee. There were thousands of tiny fish that stayed right on the fringes of it, maybe for nutrients? Whatever, the birds were able to get an easy meal!!
