Subject: Trip Report 7/15-7/29

Thought I would post a small trip report for those who will be visiting Sanibel soon. We arrived Saturday 7/15 after two hours of sleep & 16 hours of driving. We stayed at Blind Pass Condos in a really nice unit.

We didn't think the shelling on Bowman's Beach was as good this year. We found lots of shells but not the amount that we usually find and most of them were small. We found tons of welks out in the water, large & small, but every one was alive so we threw them back in. We also found some beautiful tulips but again they were alive so we threw them back also. We did find lots of small shells at Lighthouse Beach one evening, but two days later couldn't find anything that wasn't alive. We had fun searching though!

The weather was nice. Sunny and HOT! It rained a few late afternoons/evenings. The gulf was calm and clear most days. I think it may have been a bit rough two days, but that was after it had rained. For the first few days there was quite a bit of seaweed in the water, close to the beach, but it was fine if you waded out past the seaweed. My kids weren't too keen on feeling it wrap around their legs. There were some dead fish on Bowman's Beach, more than I had seen in the past. There were a lot of dead fish on Lighthouse Beach. Maybe I shouldn't say a lot, they weren't piled up or anything, but they were laying all along the beach. You had to watch or you would step on them. There were eels or sea snakes washed up also. I guess this was due to the Red Algae/Tide? I wasn't much affected at Bowman's Beach, but our outings at Lighthouse Beach made me cough.

We bought groceries at WalMart before crossing the causeway, then bought items at Bailey's or Jerry's as needed. We fixed several meals in (Blind Pass Condos has installed 6 new gas grills that are nice, clean & very convenient). We ate out at several places:

Lazy Flamingo - good Grouper & good service;

Island Cow - great breakfast, large portions, good service;

Green Flash - great Alfredo, but the service was pretty slow, there were several large parties there that evening so that may have made a difference;

Gramma Dots - the best coconut shrimp & really good service;

Bubble Room - OK dinner, great dessert, really expensive, great service;

Cheeburger Cheeburger - Yummy! Loved the new location with spacier seating. Service was the worst. Our waitress couldn't get anything right and then messed up the bill. Our friends had good service the night they were there so hopefully ours was just a fluke;

McT's - Food was OK. Not as good as other meals we've eaten there. Service was OK, our waitress was very odd and made us feel uncomfortable. When our friends visited several evenings later they were out of their signature dessert which was the best part of our meal;

Sanibel Grill - Great crunchy grouper & shrimp and really good service.

We saw lots of wildlife on the beaches and tons of birds in the canal between Blind Pass Condos & Bowman's Beach. We saw alligators when we drove thru the Wildlife Refuge. We found that the best time to go thru the refuge was right before closing. There was a very large turtle dead on Bowman's Beach. It died about 3-4 days before the end of our trip and was still laying on the beach when we left.

It was a great trip and we hated to leave. There's something about Sanibel that stays with you long after you leave.
