Subject: Trip Report September 16-23

Hi! Long time reader here. I thought I would share some info on my Septmeber trip. I went down with my Mom and Sister from Connecticut and we all stayed at Sand Pebble unit 2F through Royal Shell. It is a 2 bedroom condo on Middle Gulf Drive, across from Sundial. Royal Shell was friendly and easy to deal with. The Condo was absolutely fabulous. They have just recently redecorated, and I did not expect much since this was a budget trip. I was very pleasantly surprised at how nice it was! WE rented a Full Size car through Alamo by Priceline, and got a rate of $15 a day, which I thought was a steal, and Alamo is a nice company, too.--We went mainly for the shelling this time. The first few days we were there, the beach was littered with tons of white bi-valves and coquinas still together, but empty. Later we found out that the Red Tide and Algae both were affecting the water, and must have caused a die-off of some of the bi-valves. The first few days, the Gastropods were almost non existant, there were no crabs, fish, or hermits either. After a few days, the shelling got better and we did end up having a nice trip, but we really had to pick and choose beaches acording to the Algae problems (the Red tide was not bad enough to influence us.) The highlight of shelling was going to Turner beach and combing the bayside area for King's Crowns. We found litterally hundreds of empty shells. It was STINKY back there, but didn't notice it until we got back to the car! We were going to go again the next day, but I just couldn't take another day of the stink. Anyhow, I bleached the crowns, and they are very lovely, and worth the work. --Like I said, this was a budget trip, so we ate mostly at reasonable places. We had Schnapper's Hots a couple times ,always excellent; Cheeburger Cheeberger which was SLOW service, but food was good; Johnny's Pizza which was good, Jerry's which I really did not care for, the food was like cafateria food; Lighthouse Cafe- I always get the granola pankcakes that are so good; Doc Fords buffalo Shrimp is excellent; Bubble Room (Mom Splurged) which is always a fun place; and a Rum Cake from Mermaid's Kitchen which was well worth the 9.00 price! All in all it was a pleasant trip. I have a picture file of all my shells on www.dotphoto.com If you would like to view them enter Sanibel as username and as password then click into the album called "2006 Cindy's Shells from Sept."
I am getting ready for my main trip starting October28th and can hardly wait! I will be going with my husband for our10th anniversary, andstaying for 2 weeks. I'll try to write another trip report when I get home!
Have fun!
Sanibel Cindy
