I don't know about "low end condo," but my family stays on Sanibel for a heck of a lot less than $8k a week. We do stay in a condo and it is less expensive than we would spend on hotels elsewhere. You say that Marco is equivalent, yet you come to Captiva for the day trip. Clearly there is something there that you are missing on Marco. Bay views and ocean views ARE amenities, and they DO raise the costs of properties, or inland Florida would be as built up as the coast is. And the peaceful and natural ambience of San/Cap is also an amenity; the primary amenity for which we go to the islands. I would not stay on Marco; I don't want an island with that much concrete and traffic (and Publix and Win Dixies). I love the fact that there is no McDonalds presence or any other chains to speak of. Marco is not Captiva. And if you think that everyone can just "pay less for everything" you don't understand economics very well. For what it is worth, the condo in which my family stays has not appreciably raised their rent in the 8 years or so that we have been going there.
