We've been to Cayo Costa several times. It's just my opinion, but I don't think Cayo Costa is any better or worse than Sanibel. I haven't found more shells there or better shells there, it's always been about the same. We have seen wild pigs running around which you don't see on Sanibel! On each of our visits the water has been a beautiful aqua color, not as murky as Sanibel... but if you think you can escape the red algae, not true! The last time we were there, Feb 2007, the algae was just as bad on Cayo Costa as the other islands. It would make a nice day trip if you've never been before.
