I ran across one of those infotainment shows while flipping through channels the other day. And one caught my attention. I think it may have been 60 minutes, although I'm not entirely sure about that. Anyway...they were having a whole expose on various rehab centers the celebs are usually talked into going to. The cost of the stay was included in the report. The cheapest was Betty Ford at $21,000/mo. And I think they had a minimum stay required of...oh..., 2 or 3 months(?). Most of the rehab "resorts" were much, much more expensive. I got a little chuckle out of it, because most of what was being shown were the luxury accommodations, and the point was stressed that as part of their treatment they had to clean their own rooms.(snort, chuckle!)
...I am sure that there is a little more to treatment there than just that. I know they have their massages, yoga classes, and anything they can do to try to stay clam and serene while detoxing and trying not to think about drugs or drinking. Plus I'm sure there is a lot of talk about support groups, plans for how to keep from relapsing in high danger situations, maybe even some self reflection, and all that good stuff.
What I find interesting though, is whenever I hear about rehab places in the media, there seems to be some equating the level of luxury of the place, as well as the price tag, to how successful the place is. And, I get the impression a lot of people, addicts or not, are truly fooled by that. (This will probably be the reason a lot of celebrities will continue to shell out the big bucks to go to these places over and over again...and continue to wonder what the hell is wrong with themselves that they can't seem to keep from the addiction, especially since they are surrounded by luxury, and paid so much money!...I guess it's a good thing they have that much money to toss around.) But, besides that, I get the impression from the media that certain places are just more fashionable to go to.
I guess I find it all a bit odd. It's as though treatment were an afterthought. I think that may be because the methods being used are the same old thing everyone has been trying forever. There's nothing new or innovative to it. A few small percentage of people these treatments work for. For most people, they don't.(Recall Betty Ford has the next highest success rate to SSH at 38%. SSH is at 80%) Which, I think, can leave open a nice bed of self deprecation "compost", ripe and ready for the seeds of continual self-loathing to grow. Blaming themselves entirely, instead of the method of treatment. After all, a place that luxurious and expensive...they must be great.
I know I'm biased, but, I can't help but still be a fan of SSH's treatment. For effectiveness it's way out in front. And the cost and length of stay is cheaper and shorter than anywhere. And the treatment is a no bones, don't mess around, get to the root of the issue, kind of program. I'm so glad I was one of the fortunate ones to make it there before having to try out a dozen different expensive rehab centers.
Thanks again SSH!
