Subject: Retraining my brain

Another reason for being so greatful for the SSH program: a retrained brain, or rather getting my brain back to it's more naturally common sense state.
I know there are a few people who actually liked the taste of alcohol as a kid. I didn't. I remember being given sips of alcohol from relatives when I was a kid to satisfy my curiosity about what was so great about these beverages adults seemed to enjoy so much. Blech! Those drinks tasted awful. And, as a kid, I would naturally not try anything again. As I got older and understood that drinking beer or wine could actually get me high and put me into a different consciousness, I drank for that reason. But, it still tasted awful. In order to bear the taste I actually 'learned' to like the taste. I brainwashed myself into believing this was good. And, eventually I thought it was. I pushed myself into drinking a poison to the point of alcoholism. Had I allowed myself to heed my natural instincts I wouldn't have.
What SSH gave me was to retrain my brain back to it's instictive state. The healthy survival mechanism that says 'Alert! Poison! Smells bad , is bad, could hurt you!'
I think there is a naturally healthy fear, for most, before ingesting a drug for the first time. But we override that naturally healthy warning system, most likely from peer pressure, or fear of not fitting in, or fear of stress, or for various other reasons. Whatever the reason, it doesn't matter. What's important is that we ignore that important danger signal, and brainwash ourselves into thinking it's good for us, when we know deep down it's not.
I believe in conquering fears. However, I think there is a good reason we have healthy fears. It helps us survive.
I'm so glad I have that survival mechanism back in place. Beer and wine smells and tastes awful again (Blech!) thanks to SSH's treatment methods.
