Cutters are kind of like depressed teens who cut their arms and legs, or prick themselves with needles, or engage in other forms of self mutilation to escape pain. Or to 'feel something' in a life where they seem numb to it all. So she was in a truly dark place when she left home and that carried over into her crossover.
