Your trouble with movie files from torrents or otherwise is not uncommon. It is always best to read comments left by others before downloading things. If you experience problems, most likely others before you do as well.

Can't specifically help you, except to say that VLC media player seems to play most video files, where some other players do not. You can get it here:

Otherwise, the following forum is the best I have come across for movie & tv shows. But again, make sure you read through comments left by those who have previous downloaded and watch files first.
