Subject: boot disk

Needing an all around universal boot disk (cd) an ideas most of the ones I have found are not working all that great,was using bart pe but then i cant switch to the cd i need to use and no floppy drive on the system,need to boot nto dos to run tests on the harddrive from dos/boot cd the drive is bad i think (laptop,dell harddrive is hitachi travelstar) found all the software at hitachi site but no luck getting booted into an evironment where i can run the harddisk tools any ideas?
