first of all you'll need some software to combine the srt file with the avi one

to adjust the timing and merge VirtualDub and VobSub is generally used

but there are other means too but preview the srt with the movie to make sure the synch is correct. subtitles are created for different versions of the same movie and may not be in synch for other versions.

cd freaks is the place for anything dealing with cd and dvd

i've tried a couple of times but lost interest using virtualdub as it can be involved. i'd recommend trying the vso software first. it's much simpler.
