beg to differ a bit with the other poster

to the most part they are correct
you are limited by your connection speed

download accelerators do help with dial up somewhat
they split files into parts and download them simultaneously
that's where the acceleration comes from

you are still limited to your network connect speed but in some cases it does help get the file faster due to the splitting

instead of one file downloading you get several parts going from the same source at the same time and therefore it is possible to get it quicker
