Subject: windows XP validation

ok.. a friend of mine is having issues right now.
his HD fried, so he's installed a new one and installed XP+sp2 from a copy/backup
everything worked fine
but now he's trying to access the internet, well trying to set it up to access the NET.He's on sky broadband ( in the UK), partway through the proceedings it tells him he needs to update his IE, to version 7, and proceeds to do this for him, if he selects no, all actions stops and all files are removed, so he's no nearer to getting his net working.. if he continues. it goes to ' windows validtoe and said invalid 9 obvious, since i bet over 1 mil comps are using the key i gave him for windows..
any solutions on how to get round this are greatfully accepted!
p.s. please give it in noob terms since i have to talk him through it and he's not very computer literate!
