Yes, advertising definitely helps. Join Top Sites lists, advertise everywhere, force your friends to join and tell other people to join, etc. etc. etc.

As far as layouts go, try to make it original. Oh, and don't design it for one screen resolution — that's a major turnoff, especially for me. My old computer could only do 640x480 (if you went to 800x600, you got black lines on either side of the screen). My computer now can only do 800x600 and 1024x768. Anyways, it's really annoying to have to go change your screen resolution for every site you visit. The layout should definitely look good in 800x600 and 1024x768, yet usable in 640x480 and the higher resolutions like 1600x1200. Oh, and the light text on the black background — though it looks nice — is very, very, very overused. Try another color scheme for a change. Actually, I've started making my own backgrounds with Adobe Photoshop.

Another thing I agree with is the research. Learn your world inside-out before you even open the game. Know what the climate is, know the history backwards and forwards, etc. It truly does help.

Umm...let's see...any more tips...**ponders** Keep your game active — keep your characters active — it really helps...try to update at least once a week. That's all i can think up for now...
