The snmpset command is usd to change the value of objects by sending SET_REQUEST messages. Here one has to use a community string that provides read/write access:
snmpset -v1 -cprivate localhost .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0 s "Test123"
SNMPv2-MIB::sysDescr.0 = STRING: Test123

one need not know the numeric form of the OID as specified above.
$snmpset -v1 -cprivate localhost sysDescr.0 s "TestSystem"
SNMPv2-MIB::sysDescr.0 = STRING: TestSystem

Even some of the options specified for snmpget are true with snmpset.
$snmpset -v1 -On -cprivate localhost sysDescr.0 s "TestSystem"
.1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0 = STRING: TestSystem
In the above examples, the value was set using a quote-delimited string. Legitimate type include integers(i), strings(s), hex strings(x), decimal strings(d), null objects(n), objectID(o), timeticks(t), and IP addresses(a), among others. For details use snmpcmd man pages.
