The ps command lists which processes are running on the system.Running processes of interest include portmap, inetd, sendmail, telnetd, and chargen.

There are a number of options available to ps, although they vary from implementation to implementation.
-a shows all users' processes
-x for all including those without controlling terminals,
-u for considerable detail.
Combinations of options also possible
-ax will provide fewer details but show more of the command line arguments
-w option to extend the displayed information to 132 columns.
-ef (only for AT&T-derived systems - nearly same as above)

inetd - a daemon service, start services on a system as they are needed.

In addition to showing what is running, ps is a useful diagnostic tool. It quickly reveals defunct processes or multiple instances of the same process, thereby pointing out configuration problems and ismular issues. %MEM and %CPU tell about resource usage and can provide crucial informaion if you have resource starvation. Or ps can be used to identify rogue processes that are spawning other processes by looking at processes that share a common PPID.
