George Lucas retires from making blockbusters
George Lucas is retiring from making blockbusters after complaining that Hollywood refused to fund his latest movie because it has a black cast.
The creator of the Star Wars films has been working on his latest venture Red Tails for 23 years, but had to finance it himself after rejections from major studios.
The film is being released in US cinemas on Friday and tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, a pioneering group of black pilots who fought in the Second World World War.
It stars Cuba Gooding Jr and Terrence Howard, and is overseen by black director Anthony Hemingway.
Lucas, 67, said: "I figured if I could get the prints and ads paid for by the studios that they would release it. I showed it to all of them and they said 'No. We don't know how to market a movie like this'.
"It's because it's an all black movie. There's no major white roles in it at all. It's one of the first all black action pictures ever made."
Lucas said the $58 million budget was "reasonably expensive" and studios were used to movies with black casts being made for less. He was also told the studios didn't believe there was a foreign market for the film.
The director, whose movies have made billions of dollars, said one studio's executives didn't even bother to turn up for the screening of Red Tails.
He told the New York Times: "Isn't this their job? Isn't their job at least to see movies? I'm retiring. I'm moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff."
Another impetus for his retirement appears to have been a backlash Lucas received from fans for making changes to the Star Wars films, including introducing extra dialogue for Darth Vader.
Lucas said: "Why would I make any more, when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?"
He intends to return to making experimental, low budget art house films of the kind he created as a student. Main Article

Hi All, I was a big fan of DOOL in the 80's/early 90's. I was having a chat with some friends about DOOL, which has prompted a somewhat earnest need to see/read the whole Shane/Kim storyline again (makes me feel like a teenager again). If TPTB want to save DOOL - bring back some grown-up characters and adventurous stories, not the pathetic self-absorbed storylines that current prevail. I'm trying to get a DVD of the Shane/Kim storyline particularly, and I'm also looking for Shane/Kim fanfic. If anyone knows where I can get either of these, I would love to know about it. Hey I will put all my support to bring back the best daytime soap couple ever. I wasn't a big soap fan until my first baby was born & I stumbled upon DOOL. I fell in love with Kimberly and Shane and when they left so did I. I would definitely watch again if they came back on.
I don't know what it is but they have something special about them. I have been watching scenes on you tube and have become a big fan all over again. I have even ordered some DVD's from Debbies site.
Anything you need me to do to get this great couple back together just holler.
