Subject: aircraft carrier sked

6. You told us that carrier C.O.s have to get by on very little sleep, usually just three hours. What is the average day like?

The best way to explain a carrier CO's daily routine is to begin by saying that when the ship is launching or recovering aircraft, or is conducting underway replenishment** alongside another ship at sea, the CO is on the bridge of the carrier. Here's a detail of an average day:

5:45 Wake up call.

6:00 Arrive on bridge. Read the morning message traffic. Coffee and toast.

6:45 Finish reading and responding to message traffic.

6:45-7:30 Department Head briefs by Operations, Supply, Safety and AIMD Departments

8:30-9:30 Daily Admiral's brief in Flag Spaces.

9:30-10:45 Conduct tour of ship.

11:00-11:45 Conduct Captain's Mast.

12:00 First launch of the day.

12:00-2400 Cyclic flight operations. Launch and recover aircraft every hour and 45 minutes.

0:30-1:15 Rendezvous with replenishment ship and complete approach to alongside.

1:15-3:00 Underway replenishment. Alongside a Navy Ammunition/Stores ship for fuel and supplies.

3:00 Complete replenishment. Retire to at-sea cabin for about 3 hours sleep.

6:00 Start a new day.

** Since the America was not a nuclear powered carrier, it needed to refuel every two to three days.
