AN OPEN LETTER TO TEACHERS AND TO ALL

April 9, 2010

Dear Fellow Teacher,

Since childhood, I have been aware of the myriad problems of teachers and the
state of education in this country. My own beloved mother was a public school
teacher. What they suffered then, such as low salaries, lack of school materials
and resources including text books lack of opportunities for professional growth
and many others are still the same ails our teachers today suffer from. The
deterioration of the educational system has severely taken away much of our
society's respect for the teaching profession. My over 15 years of teaching and
working with fellow teachers in Philippine College of Commerce, (now PUP),
Philippine Women's University and St. Scholastica's College has strengthened my
resolve to improve and strengthen education as a response to the problems of our
nation.

During my stint in Philippine College of Commerce, together, I, with fellow
lawyer-teachers established Lupon ng Manananggol ng Bayan (LUMABAN) to defend
teachers and students who were harassed for being at the forefront asking for
reforms in society.

As teachers, you have deep sense of the continuing deterioration of our
education, and as a consequence, the much lowered stature of teachers in our
communities. This cannot go on for we know that quality education and a nation's
progress are symbiotically linked. The better educated our youth and teachers
are, the greater our chances of moving forward and raising the quality of our
lives as Filipinos.

As Mayor of makati, I have made sure that every child has access to free public
education from grade school to college. To ensure quality education, there is a
school in every barangay equipped with computers and up-to-date. Students are
provided free books and uniforms, and graduates from the University of Makati
have sure employment. Public school teachers in Makati have better salaries than
in other cities and are given financial assistance to pursue graduate and
post-graduate degrees for those deserving.

Because I was orphaned early, I know and can speak of poverty intimately. If not
foa an uncle who sustained me despite his own poverty, I would not have
survived. if I had not persevered to finish school at a meager allowance and
almost without any school materials, or if I had not strove hard, worked day and
night, I would not get to where I am now.

As Mayor of makati, motivated by my own experience of hardship and deprivation,
I have set in livelihood projects, senior citizen benefits such as 30% discount
on medicines, free movies, free cake and P1000 on birthdays, and free burial
services. These programs are also my way of giving back to our elders for all
their sacrifice and care in guiding their children and the youth.

But more importantly, i remind you not to lose sight of truism that only
education will liberate us from poverty of body and poverty of mind. our nation
needs leaders with a wide experience, a deep understanding of the human
condition and a kind of critical intelligence to bring us ready and qualified
for the future.

I ask for your support; vote for me as VICE-PRESIDENT because i am that kind of
a leader.

Good for education! Good for the nation!

Together let us restore the dignity that rightfully belongs to the teaching
profession.

I trust in you.

MAYOR JEJOMAR BINAY
