Date Posted: 10:58:32 09/03/10 Fri Hi guys, here it goes... Just a sample of what i´m thinking about the essay we dealing with... please, tell me if i am on the right way! It is undeniable that modern society is facing the empowerment of high technologies. Among these, the virtual world with all its sources and equipment is imposing new methodologies on the educational field. However, the so called Online Education, that follows these transformations, brings together many controversial issues. Issues concerning ethical values, social equality, widely accessibility, favorable opportunities, environmental and intellectual challenges, etc. For this reason the government committees and academic society are raising questions like: Will online education be a factor of social equanimity? Are people self-prepared to deal with this kind of education process? Will this new Virtual University replace the classical education? What is going to happen to the so important social environment offered by ‘physical´ communities at university campuses? How to create a more innovative, effective and efficient education system? It is imperative nowadays that people acquire new technological skills and abilities if they intend to belong to the virtual world. This process society is facing so far is unstoppable. Sure it is that like many other transition, this new virtual environment brings approval from some and disapproval from others. For instance, according to the article Ethical Issues for the Virtual University by Philip Brey from University of Twente, The Netherlands, he says that virtual universities cannot offer a wide range of extracurricular activities and social services because many activities and services cannot be reproduced in electronic form. Also, many authors have stated that a profound learning experience, which includes the transmission of academic values, requires a real-world settings in which people engage in face-to-face. Furthermore, The New York Times has reported that “ the American Federation of Teachers”, concerning the distance learning, noted “All our experience as educators tell us that teaching and learning in the shared human spaces of a campus are essential to the undergraduate experiences” . The point is: if the society is dealing with a process that is far beyond its decision making, it, then, has to go for it. This society needs to crate alternative mechanisms to cope with this critical situation. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
