A refereed journal is a periodical that contains articles that have been evaluated by an expert in the field. Those scholarly journals are only published once they have passed through the review process.

The review process is also known as peer-review, and it involves a critical inspection or examination, to guarantee that the information in an academic journal is of the highest quality. For this process to take place it requires a community of experts in a certain field who are qualified to perform an impartial review.

To determine if a journal is peer-reviewed or not, one may look at the journal itself and search at the editorial statement for references to the peer review process (this information is usually located in the first pages or at the end of the journal). Other way of ensuring if the journal has been submitted trough the review process, is to look up the journal in Ulrich’s Periodical Directory, to find out whether the journal is refereed.

Refereed journals, magazines, newspapers and newsletters are all periodicals that are published with a certain frequency, but there are several differences between those media. Those differences are noticeable by observing for example; the way they approach the subject in their content, the purpose of that publication, for what audience is made and their physical layout.

A refereed journal is created by specialists of a certain field, and addressed for a specific audience, like scholars, specialists and students of an academic environment. The main purpose of a Refereed journal is to report original research or experimentation and to communicate this information to the rest of the scholarly world. An article published in a refereed journal offers accurate information to a certain academic field, based on research. Just as it is named, a refereed journal usually pass through several stages of revision until is published.

Magazines on other hand tend to appear more generic and are designed by anyone that can write about a certain subject, a magazine writer does not need to be exactly a specialist in a certain area of knowledge. Writers of magazines are usually journalists, poets, essayists, and people who feel comfortable with the topic being presented. Magazines are addressed for informing the general public and the opinion expressed in their articles tend to be more personal than accurate, contrasting the contents of a refereed journal.

A newspaper is a publication that concentrates in informing what is new in a certain field or area of the world. The articles contained in a newspaper are made to inform and to give facts to the reader about events and situations that are going to happen or had already happened. A newspaper, just like magazines, is usually written by journalists, writers and essayists. Other kind of publication that is similar to newspaper, are Newsletters. That printed or online media, can be define as a report that informs a special group of subscribers.

It is important for one to be aware of the differences among all media in order to research accurately. This is particularly true when mentioning someone who is looking for theoretical information about a certain field. If one researches in the right place he or she will find an accurate source that can be really useful for a project that also be quoted in one article. For example, if one needs theoretical knowledge about a research made in the applied linguistic area, it will be ethical to look for a refereed journal in that field, and not to search in other types of media to knowledge a research. The other types of media, like newspapers, magazines and newsletters are good for general information and update about a certain topic, and where one can also find scientific, specialized and discipline-specific information. But accurate and safe information in a scholarly field, are those contained in a refereed journal.

In the Applied Linguistic Field there are many scholarly international refereed journals, like for example, Reading in a Foreign Language. RFL is a scholarly international refereed journal and has established itself as an excellent source for the latest developments in the field, both theoretical and pedagogical, including improving standards for foreign language reading.

This fully-refereed journal is published twice a year, in April and October. The editors seek manuscripts concerning both the practice and theory of learning to read and the teaching of reading in any foreign or second language. Reviews of scholarly books and teaching materials, conference reports, and discussions are also solicited. The language of the journal is English, but lexical citations of languages other than English are acceptable the journal encourages research submissions about reading in languages other than English. From time to time, special issues are published on themes of relevance to our readers. The most frequently covered themes published over the past twelve months, are concerned about the importance of reading in a second language acquisition in order of a learner gain more vocabulary. Following comes some issues which were most written by the authors of this Journal over the past twelve months, they generally concentrate in these points: familiar vocabulary size and reading comprehension; learning vocabulary through reading; reading comprehension and vocabulary retention.

Some very interesting researches were made by the contributors of RFL during the past twelve months. During the month of April, in the year of 2010, the journal was divided into two segments: Vocabulary and Reading; Teaching and learning vocabulary. Most researches were suggesting and verifying different ways that learners of L2 can acquire and improve their vocabulary acquisition using different methods or sources. The articles of Reading in a Foreign Language, volume 22, were focusing on fluency reading and read speed of L2 learners and bilingual students might have. It was also focusing in the importance of a teacher performance for students acquire new vocabulary.

The volume 21 of Reading in a Foreign Language, published during the month of October, in the year of 2009. In that issue the contents presented varied, like for example: The importance of a teachers’ role as a model in reading; adequacy of print source material for language acquisition in learners of a second language; how a topic interest may affect second language learners reading comprehension; studying learners reading proficiency in second language and more. In general, the contents of Volume 21 were focusing on the reading ability and reading language performances of certain foreign groups.

After reading some of those articles published in Reading in a Foreign Language, one can open up his or her perception about reading and vocabulary acquisition, with some general ideas such as: A person acquires vocabulary not through memorization, but by accruing fragments of word knowledge for each word that he or she encounters every day. The word becomes learnt, even without any explicit teaching. This can only be achieved through reading. Vocabulary learning is a gradual process of encountering new words that add to and reinforce the vocabulary acquired previously.

Other researches’results also pointed about the importance of teachers’ part on student’s development. One study confirmed a hypothesis that even though the teachers believe in the importance of reading and modeling, they do not model reading. By modeling one understands that is the act of reading which is essential in influencing students. It also refers to the patterning of thoughts, beliefs, strategies, and actions after those displayed by the model, usually teachers have to explain and demonstrate skills. That is really important for a child, who will follow the beliefs and behaviors of an adult perceived to be important. Consequently, any activity that particular adult performs, the child responds with a desire to do it as well. Even adults are usually very inspired by their teachers’ performance and example as model.

Summarizing, after browsing some of the articles presented in the past twelve months in hat journal, one can perceive the importance of Reading as an activity that needs special attention from educators when they are practicing with their students. Because executing a good performance in the classroom, goes beyond promoting the task in itself. It takes sometimes a lot of planning and thinking the best way of achieving real results. Reading and following a refereed journal is other way of improving the teacher’s performance in the classroom. Another way to improve the classroom performance and to make a change in the educational system is trough a research itself. It is useful to say that teachers should try to do their own research and to become researchers themselves.

Teachers who are researchers, and researchers in general that are interested in publishing an article in a journal, must take some action in order for the article to be published. First write to the journal and then learn about their general publication policies. For an article to be considered, it needs to be new or different then what has been already published. The article should also be consistent with the subject treated in that journal of interest. There a lot of researches being made all the time in any field of the academic world, but if one is able to contribute somehow for that field, it does not matter how small that contribution is, as long as it is concise and unique.

Reading in a Foreign Language welcomes new articles in the area of reading
to submit an article there an author should; send a brief biographical writing, a submission form signed by the author stating the authenticity of the material and a form showing that the article hasn’t been published anywhere else. All those information and the article itself, must be sent to RFL address by mail or email. According to RFL all of their articles, reviews and commentaries must follow requirements proposed in their publication policies. A research should have; an abstract, an Introduction, a Method section, a Results section, a Discussion section, a Conclusion, References and Appendices of instrument(s) used.

Reading in a Foreign Language is really a good refereed journal and an excellent resource for the Applied Linguistic Community. Also it is a great way of students and teachers become more familiar with the latest accomplishment of researchers that have the same interest in common. Although researches are really useful, they become more meaningful once that one is able to put them into practice.
